My OKCupid matches increasingly look and sound like girls I would have died to get when I was 19 but kinda roll my eyes at now and I can’t tell if that’s because I answered questions in a way that reflect a self-image that firmed up at that point more than my actual present self, or if it’s because Portland.

I’ve been trying to get into cologne lately. I’ve basically been wearing the same BDU pants and leather jacket and hair (facial and otherwise) every day for years, only the t-shirt cycling, and I’m pretty okay with that, but the ability to accessorize into another sense seems like it would add some nice variety.

There’s a pretty great perfume store in town with a staff that’s been great at taking my vague, uninformed preferences and steering me to stuff I like - I’m going with Serge Noire as a standard night scent and I’m looking for a vetiver or some light, planty scent for the day, if I can find one that doesn’t fade to nothing immediately.

The thing is I’ve never done this before - I have no idea how to apply without an atomizer, that plastic wick attached to the cap is a real three shells mystery, I don’t have a sense how “loud” I should smell it, and how that translates for people whose noses are more than 4 inches from my neck. There’s no such thing as a mirror for smell. So I’m constantly afraid I’m That Guy With Way Too Much Cologne On and strangers are too polite to say. Lot more sympathy for 15-year-old guido/ettes.

I was thinking the other day that the ‘80s had a lot of good time travel movies - the incomparable Back to the Future series obviously, but also Bill & Ted, Terminator, Flight of the Navigator, even Star Trek 4. And Quantum Leap on TV. But recently we’ve had what, Hot Tub Time Machine? Safety Not Guaranteed? (Well, I guess Doctor Who on TV.)

Which got me thinking - for a series premised on time travel, there’s not much time travel in the Terminator movies. Like, once each movie gets going, as far as “rules” of the universe go, “dogs bark at Terminators” literally has more influence on plot developments than “both Skynet and the resistance are capable of traveling back in time”.

Really, you’d think the resistance could just relocate back to prehistory. Hell, between John’s conception and Cyberdyne developing Skynet from T1’s T-800, it’s established that closed causality cycles work, so that could be the origin of humanity, stuck in an endless recurring loop punctuated by machine-war apocalypse.

So I guess what I’m saying is the third Matrix movie might have actually worked as a Terminator film.

Mischief Night

Mischief Night

Huh, I knew Detroit called it devil’s night, but I (from suburban Philly) assumed everyone else called it mischief night.

If you’ve never seen one of Ronald Reagan’s press briefings you really should. The man was a master. He’d take a question, ricochet it off two completely unrelated talking points, and then reveal he’d been setting up a joke at liberals’ expense that was so legitimately funny that the whole room cracked up and even if you were specifically looking he’d be on to the next one before you noticed he hadn’t actually answered it at all.

What happens when a fax machine meets a voice-to-text transcription service that doesn’t know it’s listening to a fax.  I love the idea that the robot uprising will come from really shy but chatty machines who really just want to say hi.

Or “hey”.
