For some reason, local consultants seem particularly fond of using this teashop for client meetings. In my last few visits, I’ve overheard different people in sessions on

* applying to colleges

* reorganizing a nonprofit organization in response to a shift in funders’ priorities

* planning a woodcrafts-themed wedding

* psyching yourself up for a job hunt

* addressing jealousy issues in polyamorous relationships

* organizing a business selling breakfast bean mash to vegans on a low-carb diet

* turning your life around by unlocking the sexual and mental chakras

yup, I’m one of those guys.

Saw this book at B&N today. Apparently the sequel is “All Dogs Have ADHD”. I shit you not.

Listening to Miami Vice: The Complete Collection. Jan Hammer was the shit. Miami Vice was the shit! A little uneven sometimes, especially the first season. Some of it still feels cutting edge today, some of it feels like it must’ve been outdated even then. I hear the later seasons just got flat ridiculous.

Michael Mann does some great dialogue, at least until he has the characters talk.

The top picture is Gabriele d'Annunzio’s Flight over Vienna, the 1918 operation in which the Italian poet-adventurer led a biplane squadron on a unprecedented 700+ mile round trip to drop propaganda leaflets over the Austro-Hungarian capital - most famously mocking Italian poetry composed by il vate himself.

Like many of the military operations d'Annunzio conceived and executed during World War One, the raid was tactically brilliant, strategically pointless, yet still valuable in terms of raising morale and as proof-of-concept for developing doctrines of mechanized combat - in this case, strategic bombing.

The lower picture, of course, comes from the period after the war, when d'Annunzio personally conquered the city of Fiume and ruled it for over a year as pirate-king, pioneering the charismatic pageantry characteristic of later fascist regimes.

So Zero Dark Thirty and people all over again are all  “abwububwuh, boo torture! people tortured won’t tell you the truth, they’ll tell you anything to make it stop!”

But OF COURSE you don’t take seriously the first things they say. The point of torture isn’t to convince people to confess, the purpose is to break them, and sever the link between their physical being and their established self-narrativization!

And once they’re broken, THEN you start remaking them into what you want, a category which can include “person who tells you things”.

Jeez people, do some LSD and pay attention.
