I’ve used Japanese exactly three times since college.

Time the first, we were on the rooftop at The Standard, one of my friends was coked up and trying to talk to some Japanese dudes in town for a hairstyling convention, and she was like “hay kontextmaschine, do you speak Japanese?”, guessing in the dark, and I was all

Time the second I was talking the JPLT (lv. 3) down at USC and was amused to find that my room’s proctor was a girl I recognized from the executive board of my college anime club.

Time the third I was waiting for my apartment renovations to finish, staying at a hotel, got drunk and lost the card to open the garage gate, and the office was closed, so I went to the Japanese expat/piano/after-hours bar next door to ask for the hotel’s phone number, and after two rounds of “what?” I was like “…fine. tonari no hoteru no denwabango, wakarimasu ka?”, which worked but meant I had to deal with drunk Japanese guys trying to talk to my drunk American ass in drunk Japanese until the bartender found it.

I’ve probably used it more in dreams, honestly.

“The most intriguing duel fought between women, and the sole one that featured exposed breasts, took place in August 1892 in Verduz, the capitol of Liechtenstein, between Princess Pauline Metternich and the Countess Kielmannsegg. It has gone down in history as the first “emancipated duel” because all parties involved, including the principals and their seconds were female… Before the proceedings began, the baroness pointed out that many insignificant injuries in duels often became septic due to strips of clothing being driven into the wound by the point of a sword. To counter this danger she prudently suggested that both parties should fight stripped of any garments above the waist. Certainly, Baroness Lubinska was ahead of her time, taking an even more radical take on the (at the time) widely dismissed theories of British surgeon Joseph Lister, who in 1870 revolutionized surgical procedures with the introduction of antiseptic. 

With the precautions Baroness Lubinska recommended, the topless women duelists were less likely to suffer from an infection; indeed, it was a smart idea to fight semiclad. Given the practicality of the baroness’ suggestion and the “emancipated” nature of the duel, it was agreed that the women would disrobe—after all, there would be no men present to ogle them. For the women, the decision to unbutton the tops of their dresses was not sexual; it was simply a way of preventing a duel of first blood from becoming a duel to the death.

It is humorous that most recounts of this historic event fail to mention two important things: the winner of the duel (Princess Metternich) and the reason why the women came to arms in the first place—they disagreed over the floral arrangements for an upcoming musical exhibition.”

I just had a thought - everyone knows how to deal with zombies these days, but all those ideas are based on the idea that they hunt in swarms, right? But – predators don’t swarm, prey swarms. Zombies would really make more sense as ambush hunters - if you don’t need to maintain body heat, or pump the heart and lungs to keep the flesh oxygenated, you could maintain a low enough metabolism to wait in one place and go centuries between feedings.

I forget where I picked it up from, but a few months ago I read someone say, offhandedly, that neo-Nazism is a cargo cult, and the more I think about it the more sense that makes.

The thing being that eliminationist anti-Semitism actually functioned in terms of the NSDAP conquest of Germany and the German conquest of the Eurasian breadbasket.

Domestically, it allowed for the seizure and redistribution of resources and social position to build a party-loyal elite without directly confronting allies in the existing Junker/manufacturing/Army officer conservative elite.

Internationally, it rendered ideologically coherent an alliance of eastern european nationalisms in a way that could easily transition into anti-Sovietism.

Whereas now, those conditions don’t pertain, anywhere. And the subcultures that claim the Nazi mantle are just taking a memory of a powerful force (the Third Reich, which basically fought two continents to a draw and lost to four in a tough fight), imitating their outward manifestations (uniforms and swastikas, stiff-arm saluting, beating up minorities), and expecting power to follow in underwear-gnomic fashion.

So: cargo cult.
