@colloquia where do you get your weighted blankets

lead-weighted blankets have like the highest shipping-to-value ratio I can imagine and you really should encourage local craft production

Wasn’t there that guy who dressed up as a hussar, charged in on a horse, and cut the ribbon with his saber for some opening ceremony of some kind, totally upstaging the planned events?

opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, dude on a horse charged in and cut the ribbon, after which he was arrested and it was replaced and cut again

Haha, he was a member of a right wing paramilitary group, but he had to borrow his horse from a little girl.

it’s the little details that bring the magic

Hillary Clinton’s problem was “I am tepid neoliberal pudding Hillary Clinton” and her solution was “I will draw my opponent as far to the right as I can and put the entire postwar order on the table”

jesus christ, I’m never gonna get over that

Nice. But I think a key bit of Brutalism is “reinforced concrete makes sheer verticality practical” and sand is the opposite, this stuff almost looks like 3D cubism

Also in re: Steve Bannon “there’s a white populist in the White House giving political advice! He says he wants to destroy the government! THIS IS NOT NORMAL”

Pat Buchanan had a close advisory role in both Nixon and Reagan’s White Houses. Grover Norquist fantasized about drowning the government in a bathtub and he was a chief architect of the Republican Revolution.

This is normal, if anything it was the Bushes’ Christian Democratic take on the GOP (”thousand points of light”/”kinder, gentler”/”compassionate conservatism”) that was the outlier.

Something I notice again and again is that everyone basically wants the same thing and has very similar ideas of how to achieve it; the zone of agreement is far wider than the points of disagreement.

Admittedly by “everyone” I implicitly ruled out people who think that any form of state is illegitimate and must be torn down, people who think tax is theft, people who glory in war of all against all, and people who long for human extinction.

But besides a few notable exceptions, we’re all on the same side!

goddamnit.

What do you think of the other Sim games?

Anonymous asked: What do you think of the other Sim games?

bloodandhedonism:

You mean by Maxis? (And I guess EA now.)

I’ve only ever played the SimCity series (up to and including 4) and the first Sims game, so I can’t comment on the others, but many of them look like they that classic 90s computer game vibe to them, which is always appreciated. OTOH it seems like most of them weren’t that great either. Maxis’s history pre-EA was pretty wild, look it up sometime.

Otherwise, uh, hmm. I was one of the few people in the world to prefer SimCity to the Sims, judging from the attention and sales records the latter series received.

SimFarm was kinda crap in endgame but underrated overall

SimEarth was not as deep as SimCity which it was pitched on par with, and a little ‘70s goofy but in that earnest optimistic way personal computers came out of

SimCopter was a cash-in

SimAnt was fuckin’ solid

SimTower was a great way to spend 2 hours in the summer

oh man, I remember this when it happenned on the happycore mailing list, the three main pillars of that community were Muppetfucker (good ol’ boy from Texas, goes as Noaphex now), Entropy (from Boston, bisupremacist, kind of a ponce), and this one redneck from like central Pennsylvania who was always going on about Beast Ice

I remember when the sound was changing around the turn of the millenium or so and there was argument over whether to call it trancecore or freeform or something else so Muppetfucker just started calling it Kenneth

Makes sense:

  • I can only do something useful once every few hours
  • Ads are everywhere
  • The pacing seems designed to be deliberately frustrating
  • A lot of the hassle would go away if had a ton of money

Oh god, wonk LARPing is the wonkiest LARPing. Look at this generalissimo’s battle plan: an academic bibliography about “hybrid regimes”, a 17-page journal article, some bitching about Fox News, and I think the payload is “don’t be mean to libertarians”
