todayintokyo:

A shrine for lost cats! If your cat has gone missing, you can offer a prayer for its safe return at Tachikawa Suitengū (立川水天宮).

It all started with jazz pianist Yosuke Yamashita (山下洋輔), whose beloved moggy went AWOL. Yamashita walked all over his neighbourhood, looking for his cat, but no success. During his wanderings he stopped at Tachikawa Suitengū, several kilometers from his home, and prayed for his cat’s return.

The next day … guess who turned up? Since then, cat lovers visit this shrine to ask for their cats’ protection, and people who’ve lost a cat pray that their pet will come back home.

If you want to hear Yamashita play, here you go

I just made a connection. The Band Aid song Do They Know It’s Christmas? was done to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine, right? But Ethiopia is famously a predominantly Orthodox country, so wouldn’t the canonical answer be “not for another two weeks, ya cunt”?

People who only speak english will never understand the struggle of not knowing if you have to call someone the ‘formal you’ or the ‘informal you’

considering a majority of native english speakers don’t even know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re,’ it’s probably for the best that the language isn’t made any more complicated than it is

Lmfao the shade

💅🏼

“Thou” used to be equivalent to the informal “you” as per the Spanish example– actually this very distinction came about thanks to the elite dominance of the related Norman language following William the Conqueror, uh, conquering England – but it was eventually regarded as too impolite to use in general and the more regarded-as-polite “you” replaced it for everything.

So really, English as a language was rather ahead in social advancement compared to many other languages, and it’s worth noting this in light of throwing off literal linguistic oppression as is supposedly the trend these days.

NERD

Just kidding :P

But in all honesty I hate the “formal” and “informal” versions of you/them. Especially if they’re family but you don’t know them and you want to make a good impression! Although this is just from my experience :/

Hey, that’s an easy excuse for formal, although you’re talking to someone naturally prissy about these things.

It could be worse. IIRC Japanese has a verb tense exclusively for speaking to the Emperor of Japan. (@kontextmaschine isn’t that true?)

I think so, but it’s not something they taught us. I remember that words could be marked on distinct formal-informal, superior-inferior AND ingroup-outgroup axes though

Tokyo 2020 welcome anime/manga/game fans from all over the world (2016)

Tokyo’s intro at the Rio Olympics closing ceremony was so superb that i felt very proud of it as the Japanese.
i think that the people in the anime/manga/game industry must be highly pleased and feel proud of it too.

the new governor of Tokyo(the lady in kimono at the ceremony), one of her campaign promises was ‘turn Tokyo into an anime land’, so the capital of my country will be more otaku friendly till 2020.

Tokyo, show the world what we’ve got!

The Japanese are such weebs.

I’m even better at modeling your interiority but I’ll use it to establish in-jokes that undermine all your complaints hours before you make them and I trim my nails with my teeth

Or not. I mean, Hamlet was the protagonist, right?

Chuck Palahniuk’s writing style consists of ejaculating on the wall and seeing what sticks.

“Dracula” isn’t a real person, “Commissioner Gordon” isn’t a real person, but Gary Oldman DOES count for both.

“man does it suck to get nuked, people who nuke people are total assholes”

(And this is neither here nor there but all the interior decoration guys have frosted tips and a lilting, mincing patter, which, like, 1994 called and it wants its total fucking stereotypes back.)

When I was growing up you were supposed to laugh at the rubeish naivete of the 1950s “Our Friend the Atom” stuff, but now that I think of it we never got nuked but I’ve known a lot of people who’ve had radiation therapy or MRIs.

The main advantage of such a gap between election and inauguration is it’s too long to maintain a peasant army.
