iwanderedon asked: REQUEST: various kinds of paired dance and bdsm and the way they match up almost exactly (and, of course, there are the guys who are there because it's a chance to touch a girl, which probably has a bdsm counterpart too but idk). what is the relationship between swing dancing and swinging. will somebody finally tell me what contra is. (why these people never actually do, you know, real dancing that's not a series of a few giant boring building blocks.)
Contra dancing has a centuries-long history? So says Wikipedia. Huh.

I had always kind of assumed it was invented in 1986 by Jewish organizations worried about intermarriage and birthrates, as a way to trick neurotic single overeducated 20-somethings into touching each other.

Not only did Trump somehow win a debate he didn’t go to, instead he had an event where the ‘08 and ‘12 Iowa caucus winners - Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum - gave auxiliary speeches from a lectern bearing his name.

As, in the language of political stagecraft, endorsers do. With nothing to gain and everyone coming for him, he somehow left everyone bruised and in his debt by running away and tricking HIS OWN OPPONENTS into endorsing him.

Unreal.

I just added an “it’s like a brer rabbit story” tag to that last post so I was like I wonder whether the tag’s richer as “brer” or “br'er” so I searched that.

There’s a lot more fucking Brer Rabbit shit out there than I expected. Scrolling through it, scrolling, scrolling. I was like “well, this IS Tumblr and he WAS in a Disney movie.”

Scrolling, scro—

“Well, this IS Tumblr, and he WAS an anthropomorphic rabbit.”

gchq document describing the use of open source software for processing hacked video feeds from israeli drones

a recurring theme in snowden/5eyes documents is the use of software and tools that mature in the civilian space, particularly OSS, and are coopted by deep state apparatus: a shadow world of the infrastructure that drives cyber in our lives, retooled for reconnaissance

SORRY

but it’s kinda nice, you lose by attrition and only replace what matters. like how we didn’t NEED gentrification when we had fire

Second, this is the result of EY asking for covert art at a price of 125$. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s an interesting event in the saga of EY doing things that will piss off the internet.

https://www.freelanced.com/job/29612/create-a-cover-for-an-english-original-light-novel-by-yudkowsky-freelance-anime-art-job

https://www.reddit.com/r/HPMOR/comments/40d6z9/125_for_an_artist_with_anime_experience_to/

To clarify, I wasn’t intending to poke fun at the art style/quality so much as the overall goofiness of the cover, especially the title

Given it’s intended genre, it fits in with titles like No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular! and so on.

Yeah, this is 100% in line with how light novels tend to be named, right down to the punctuation

The next question: what does the fandom (for such a dread beast shall doubtless arise) settle on as the ‘official’ acronym?

(EY suggested Summoned Hero in a reddit thread, but that seems a bit clunky; it’s a a pity that english doesn’t allow for the nice and quick contractions that are regularly pulled off for light novels in japanese [eg WataMote for that which nuclearspaceheater mentioned, Haganai, DanMachi, etc])

yeah no that’s actually a very good 3/4s-ass overliteral translation of the Japanese grammatical forms that would be used to title an installment’s worth of pulpy fiction. Add in the art and it’s very 1999.

Well, I just slipped and wiped out carrying a full French press around the house.

Which means I created a pile of broken glass, steaming hot coffee and dirty grounds on my bedroom floor for the sole purpose of faceplanting in it.

That was fun.

This is literally a remake of Triumph of the Will in contemporary film vocabulary.

It is a political rally highlights film which begins with the arrival of the headliner’s plane, then some testimonials to his greatness and exhibitions of the scale of his following. Then he speaks, which you notice is more audience than podium shots, in service of the overriding message - these ordinary people are part of something bigger, something powerful, a force of destiny, and you can be too.

But where Riefenstahl’s original was a cinematic breakthrough, this one uses techniques developed in the MTV revolution of the ‘80s that are now the basis of modern blockbusters - very fast cuts, heavy use of conspicuous filters, a score of contemporary pop on the adventurous edge of mainstream, to-the-bone editing that compresses the whole arc into a few minutes.

It is very well done and I guarantee you there is NO ONE capable of putting it together who wouldn’t know exactly what they were doing.

That’s an interesting thought though - were the cinematic tendencies to replace long, steady shots with quick cuts AND to replace purpose-composed orchestral scores with pop soundtracks mutually reinforcing, a case of audio and video switching roles?

Like, songs with motive force of their own lend a heavily cut sequence the kind of coherence and continuity that long, carefully matched shots used to; insert shots that focus on important props or actions in the “Hey Lookit This” role that orchestral stings used to…

Something I’ve been thinking about is like we assume that old radical discourse is like made for its own sake with no, lets say, ulterior motives. But how much discourse from back in the day comes from the same infighting and how much of it exists, lets say, more as a rhetorical weapon than as a way for analyzing the world (for a contemporary example see monosexism)

For an older case see labor aristocracy

This strikes me as a false dichotomy. When Discourses are working, incentives are aligned so that infighting, points-scoring, and so on produce attempts to analyze the world. My intuiiton feeling is that late 19c/early 20c radical discourse had more concern for good epistemology and for Winning In The Real World than late 20c/early 21st, and so was in a better position to produce good analyses, but of course that could be rose-tinted glasses speaking.
