Molly McAleer once told me I was the first person in LA to recognize her, outside Safari Sam’s where she had done a video bit for Defamer at a lesbian party a few days earlier.

Later she kicked me out of her apartment and life for telling her that she was one half eastside, one half westside, and one half lace curtain Irish, and none of the halves made sense together.

Also then I said that E on Entourage was terrible and Ari was the only respectable one, which I knew from the internet was pushing her buttons but was true.

Also this means now I just have to get Molly Young to tell me off to earn the trifecta.

Saw Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back again last night.

Wow that was a sloppy, indulgent movie. Sloppy by the standards of stoner road comedies, even.

Fun, though. The costuming was very 1998, which I hadn’t even noticed to recognize as a thing before.

So here’s a thing: Zoroastrianism is a highly ritualized religion, and most of the rituals center on purified (and purifying) fire.

The most highly ranked fire must be lit from 16 types of fire, including fire from a blacksmith, fire from lightning, fire from a cremation, and fire from the home fires of all the classes.

And here’s another thing: Zoroastrianism forbids cremation, and has ritual restrictions regarding both corpses and fire. As a consequence of which, the holiest Zoroastrian temples can only be sanctified with the cooperation of non-Zoroastrians.

There are nine of the holiest temples - Atash Behram - in the world. 8 in India and 1 in Iran. History is that a lot of them were sanctified under the patronage of non-Zoroastrian local rulers. So now that’s one of my minor goals for Los Angeles.

On May Day, just after leaving her fiancé, 23-year-old Evelyn McHale wrote a note. ‘He is much better off without me … I wouldn’t make a good wife for anybody,’ … Then she crossed it out. She went to the observation platform of the Empire State Building. Through the mist she gazed at the street, 86 floors below. Then she jumped. In her desperate determination she leaped clear of the setbacks and hit a United Nations limousine parked at the curb. Across the street photography student Robert Wiles heard an explosive crash. Just four minutes after Evelyn McHale’s death Wiles got this picture of death’s violence and its composure. The serenity of McHale’s body amidst the crumpled wreckage it caused is astounding. Years later, Andy Warhol appropriated Wiles’ photography for a print called Suicide (Fallen Body).

So when exactly did the cool black kids start taking their fashion leads from white suburban kids? MySpace? Oh god, it was MySpace, wasn’t it?

I spend a lot of time noticing how everything in Los Angeles is exactly like it’s stereotyped to be, so let’s take a special break to note something that isn’t like I was told: the DMV.

I was afraid of this one. Because everything you know about the world and haven’t directly experienced comes from people living in Los Angeles, and the DMV as portrayed on TV and movies is terrible. And even in real life: people were like “oh, go to AAA instead of the DMV anytime you can, they’re awful!” and “oh, make a reservation if you have to go to the DMV, it’s awful!”

The only thing I heard that’s held true is that it’s largely staffed by women in their 30s and 40s.

I heard that they were apathetic and brusque and slow in processing your affairs, not at all, they’re friendly and hella efficient, though I do take the effort to know what I’m doing before I show up, so that probably helps.

I heard that they would give you the wrong form and then cycle you through the line several times, that they would be sticklers about ridiculous things on filling out the forms and then cycle you through the line several times, quite the opposite. They’ve always given me the right forms, and when I’m confused about something or make an error or can’t fill in a blank they’ve freely volunteered that oh, this isn’t necessary in your case, and ah, don’t worry about that I got it, and oh hm, I can fill in this information that you didn’t have at hand.

I heard that on top of working slow (which they don’t), they would close down and take breaks on strict schedule and leave everyone waiting in the lurch - actually they just stop taking new people through the inprocessing line but stay around until everyone there’s been taken care of.

Also you can make appointments if you want and even if you don’t their auto-estimate waits (available online or as tickers on site) are rarely more than an hour and I’ve always experienced that as an overestimate by half.
