I’ve been experimenting with writing very, very short stories made up entirely of the example sentences given for words in the dictionary, with nothing added except a little punctuation to piece them together.

The idea came about when I noticed that the sentences used in Dictionary.app (which uses the New Oxford American Dictionary) were either weirdly specific or unexpectedly poignant. Talking to a lexicographer friend, I found out that these sentences are referred to as ‘in-line example sentences’ and are editorially researched and written by lexicographers in order to demonstrate the most probable construction of a sentence including that word.

I’m writing a handful of these and illustrating them for a little zine for next month’s Zinefest, but I’ll share more here when it’s wrapped up.

This is great.

What do you want to bet the ad executive behind the “Real Colonel Sanders” campaign originally conceived it as an intern’s bong-hit Kubla Khan when Dave Thomas (of Wendy’s) died?

Hey remember when in the 2000s they hired Dennis Miller and Rush Limbaugh as football commentators except Limbaugh made everyone uncomfortable by bringing race into it and Dennis Miller just did his Dennis Miller “let’s drop hella obscure history references to show off”* thing?

My parents are visiting so we drove down to Eugene, so I’ve been listening to the radio again.

One of the interesting things about marijuana (I just now notice AutoCorrect suggesting “marihuana”, which is charming) becoming legal is the Top 40 stations immediately and smoothly incorporating it into their vision of normiedom.

Like I just heard one of the chipper DJs teasing an upcoming human interest bit as “weed and ice cream, what could be a better combination? Coming up, we’ll talk to one local woman who’s making marijuana ice cream. Yum!”

Other thing I’ve noticed about Top 40 radio - yeah, pop’s gotten a lot more rap…pish in the past decade or so, but rap’s also got a lot more poppy. At this point it seems the real distinction between (pop-) rap and rock is whether the vocals service the rhythm or the melody, and whether the pattern-break 2/3s through is a bridge or a guest verse.

Further radio thoughts: jfc, what even IS “country” these days?

Like put the thedish thematics aside, the only musical commonality I’m hearing here is “jangly guitar, like, lower-pitched than ukulele twee or even garage rock, but sliiiiiigghtly higher than ‘80s dad rock”.

researching 17th century piracy tonight. came across this:

One popular pastime amongst pirates was the mock trial.  Each man played a part be it jailer, lawyer, judge, juror, or hangman.  This sham court arrested, tried, convicted, and “carried out” the sentence to the amusement of all. (x)

how widespread could this have really been? how would it have gotten passed from ship to ship? can you imagine a pirate crew at a tavern, bragging to another pirate crew about how good they are at playing pretend? why was their go-to game “legal system”? were they performing incisive satire? is this some sort of pirates-only inside joke that’s been lost to the ages?

update: the mock-charge in the mock-trial was piracy

they used to pretend to try each other for piracy

as a stress relief

ok but it’s got to have been a lot of fun to be the pirate defense lawyer, for the pirate accused of piracy, to attempt to argue to the pirate judge, in front of a jury of pirate peers, that your client could not possibly be a pirate

this is the group bonding activity i never knew i needed

That whole “Florida Gun Range Will Serve Alcohol” viral story, like in that it will have an on-site restaurant that serves drinks?

Set aside the “LOL guns”, it’s the “LOL Florida” part of the reception that really bugs me, because like, you realize this whole time there’s been a gun range in Los Angeles with an on-site bar and grill?

I’ve been there! To discharge firearms and consume alcohol. One time I was there and all of a sudden everyone up and left so I assumed it was closing and downed my drink, apparently it had been an earthquake I didn’t even notice sitting on my barstool.

Is this joke… risqué?

Remember when “risqué“ was a word?

I miss it.

God knows it’s easier to fit to meter than “NSFW”.
