Maggi Hambling (British, b. 1945, Sudbury, Suffolk, UK) - Summer Wave Tunnel, 2010 Paintings: Oil on Canvas
For reference this is the only thing of mine I know to have been put on the Something Awful forums, and that was second- or third- hand. It was a fucking 2002/3 sophomore anthropology paper. One of the more pompous lines (sorry) got turned into a Matrix “Agent Smith” meme, which were called “macros” back then.
In high school (late ’90s) I had a goon friend, he went by “Chaucer” with a Card Captor Sakura sig. So I heard shit in the lunchroom and couldn’t figure why anyone would pay $10 for that while USENET was free.
Thomas Aquinas: Look, this works, right? me: Yep. Thomas Aquinas: It's pretty well precedented that it works. me: No argument. Thomas Aquinas: Because by working, it generates the resources and conditions necessary for it to work. me: Exactly. Thomas Aquinas: Now here's the thing. me: There's a thing? Thomas Aquinas: See, if you take all of the elements of its working, and then apply Aristotle— me: Honestly you had me at "this works". Thomas Aquinas: No no bear with me. First, you assume God. Then you think about what that would mean for Aristotle, and then you apply Aristotle to all the elements of its working, and can you guess what meaning pops out? me: Wait there's a meaning now? Thomas Aquinas: Can you guess? me: … Thomas Aquinas: "God." Boom, mind blown, right? me: …
How successful was the early 20th century attempt to purge America of Germanism?
Well, successful enough that to this day historians can get away with saying that American federalism must have been inspired by the Iroquois Confederacy, confident that their audience won’t stop to note that the international statesmen and men of letters who defeated the Elector of Hanover to establish a compact of sovereign states loosely led by a supreme executive selected by electors were probably at least aware of the Holy Roman Empire.
tbh I think the fact that things like “vanilla privilege” and “monosexual privilege” are concepts that people actually believe exist are good reason to throw out privilege analysis. It’s an incredibly liberal point of view that focuses on individual grievances rather than seeing discrimination as a structure that harms people institutionally.
the issue is that neoliberalism prefers privilege politics to solidarity politics and so encourages the former to spread while diminishing the latter. i like the way david harvey put it:
Values of individual freedom and social justice are not, however, necessarily compatible. Pursuit of social justice presupposes social solidarities and a willingness to submerge individual wants, needs, and desires in the cause of some more general struggle for, say, social equality or environmental justice. The objectives of social justice and individual freedom were uneasily fused in the movement of ’68. The tension was most evident in the fraught relationship between the traditional left (organized labour and political parties espousing social solidarities) and the student movement desirous of individual liberties. The suspicion and hostility that separated these two fractions in France (e.g. the Communist Party and the student movement) during the events of 1968 is a case in point. While it is not impossible to bridge such differences, it is not hard to see how a wedge might be driven between them. Neoliberal rhetoric, with its foundational emphasis upon individual freedoms, has the power to split off libertarianism, identity politics, multiculturalism, and eventually narcissistic consumerism from the social forces ranged in pursuit of social justice through the conquest of state power. It has long proved extremely difficult within the US left, for example, to forge the collective discipline required for political action to achieve social justice without offending the desire of political actors for individual freedom and for full recognition and expression of particular identities. Neoliberalism did not create these distinctions, but it could easily exploit, if not foment, them.

How insufferably “clever” am I?
So insufferably “clever” that I was just taking a shit and thought to myself “you know, if Louis Phillipe had been German, they’d call him the Burgher King”.
And then bore down harder so I could finish up and post that asap.
“In the virtual dream world, the two embark on a motorcycle journey and sky-dive, as well as engage in a steamy makeout session.
One part of the video shows the characters boarding and taking flight in a biplane which, combined with the digital technology, creates what is often regarded as a fascinating dichotomy between antiquated and modern technology, in some ways presenting a parallel for the characters.”
“The music video for “Livin’ on the Edge” is notable for a number of things, including depicting vandalism, theft (notably grand theft auto), joyriding, airbag crashing, unprotected sex, and violence among school-aged youth, cross-dressing teachers, a naked Steven Tyler holding a zipper by his crotch with half his body painted black (to give the effect he pulled down a zipper, unzipping his body) and lead guitarist Joe Perry playing a lead guitar solo in front of an oncoming train. Directed by Marty Callner, the video was praised for its groundbreaking theatrical scenes and special effects. The video featured acting by the young Edward Furlong.“
"A music video was produced to promote the single. The video was directed by Michael Bay, and had a surreal landscape described as "12 Monkeys meets Brazil”, which was meant to parody grunge videos. Many supermodels, such as Angie Everhart, are featured dressed as nurses, dominatrices and princesses.“
"In the final scene, Steven Tyler finds a sandwich on the beach. When he puts it in his mouth, he learns too late that it was a bait as Steven is reeled into the ocean.”
585. Precisely the thing that “alpha PUAs” think qualifies them as alpha — skirt-chasing — is what disqualifies them from alphaness forever. You think Borgia chased skirts? You’ve never opened a history book in your life. The PUA thinks like a woman. Does a tree fall in the forest if there’s no woman around to see it? And the answer of the PUA is: no. Alpha PUAs are fags, by the technical definition of fag, even. Fagotry thought through to its ultimate conclusions: the culmination of feminism as a complete philosophy of life. It is here that woman reigns supreme and makes the rules. And the goal of the “alpha PUA”, is to discover them.icycalm > jim
What’s the message, the through-line of a PUA blog? “You are worthless because you are incompetent at attracting and keeping quality mates. But we can help! Here is a simplified framework for understanding the opposite sex. Here, let’s commiserate over your plight. Here are some clever tricks to try next time. Here is a picture and praise of someone to emulate. Here’s a negative example of what to avoid. Here are testimonials from people who found success by following our recommended methods! Here are cautionary tales of those who didn’t. Here is a fun quiz to judge your progress!”
Fucking Cosmo for men.
Christ, one thing about riding a motorcycle, you develop an intimate connoisseurship about road surfacing.
You want to sell infrastructure spending as a right-conservative priority, pitch it to the bikers.
Just like you sell conservation by pitching it to the hunters.
You want to get away with backwalking Tuffonkrime™? “The Johnny Cash Institute for Criminal Reform”.
