Why Does Los Angeles Attract So Many Cults?

di-kot-o-me:

“We went deep on the Los Angeles obsession with cults, cultists, cult-like groups, organizations we’d never refer to as cults for legal reasons, organizations that are definitely not cults but are kinda weird, and other related subjects. You don’t have to go into a trance or commune with any ancients to relive it—here it is, in all its alien superbeing glory:

Engraved here is a rendition of an image of the Dwarf Fortress learning curve. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It depicts an obsidian overhang which menaces with spikes of obsidian and tears. Carved on the overhang is an image of Toady One and the players. The players are curled up in a fetal position. Toady One is laughing. The players are burning.

May I ask why Utena's canonization on tumblr is surprising? I'm just curious- I'd find it quite unsurprising.

Anonymous asked: May I ask why Utena's canonization on tumblr is surprising? I'm just curious- I'd find it quite unsurprising.

Oh, thematically and all it’s very up tumblr’s alley, that’s what I meant by Correct when I called it “Correct but surprising”. The surprising is that for a long time it was kind of obscure - there was an official English release (with atrocious voice acting) for the first 13 episodes (the “Student Council Saga”) but it didn’t catch on. And for maybe a decade you could only get the rest of it on fansubbed VHS (this is when I saw it, at the anime club that had originally subbed it). Even when the other arcs got an official licensed release it wasn’t treated as a big thing (iirc the “big thing” then was… KareKano? Maybe Excel Saga.)

So to see it treated now as one of the pillars of ’90s anime, up there with Evangelion and maybe above Cowboy Bebop, not even to mention Trigun or Escaflowne or Nadesico (which were much bigger at the time), comes as a bit of a shock.

The 3-ladder system of social class in the U.S.

The 3-ladder system of social class in the U.S.

The analysis is a bit stale, and I think the “evil E1” bit is ridiculous (I would accept “machiavellian”), but the underlying schema’s worth considering nonetheless.

(if anyone should be surprised to come across a Final Fantasy VI reference in the middle of an analysis of social structure it sure as hell shouldn’t be me, but here we are)

Whole thing reminds me of “ladder theory”, which was to Internet 1.0 what “Game”/“redpill” heteromasculinism is to 2.0 (I mean, look at this fucking webdesign)

People: Boo! Boo!
Monarch: Nobility, are they booing me?
Nobility: Ah, no, they're saying "Boo-urgeoise. Booo-urgeoisie!"
Monarch: Are you saying "boo", or "boo-urgeoisie"?
People: Booo!
Liberals: *We* were saying "boo-urgeoisie".
