rereading this (to revel in my glories) and I just realized, they need to reboot rogue to be a camgirl.

Ecce Romani fanfic exists. I. what.
edit: this is a thing of beauty.
I just visited the Ecce Romani tag. It is composed entirely of broken carriage jokes, Flavia/Cornelia shippers, and people giving each other homework help. I have discovered the perfect fandom and it’s centered on my sixth-grade Latin textbook.
You know what my favorite piece of reactionary media is?
Ghostbusters.
Hear me out, I’ve mentioned this before, but forever ago. It’s a movie about a bunch of guys who, in the go-go ’80s, give up on academia to found a startup based on cutting edge technology. They settle in gritty New York City, specifically rehabilitating decaying public safety infrastructure, and their job description is literally “drive around town with the siren on, rehabilitating once-glorious locations by imprisoning vandalous spooks”.
They clean the city up, create jobs for the black and white ethnic working class, but face resistance from pointy-headed bureaucrats. (The dickless EPA guy manages to represent both “overregulation” and “safety-threatening prisoner releases” with admirable efficiency.) Ultimately though, the meddlers have to relent in the face of their success at making the city safe for innocents, as represented by yuppie singles in their 30s.
(Ghostbusters II is about the guys making the city a safe place for those yuppies to raise kids by cleansing cultural institutions of evil influence using the power of American patriotism, while the judiciary and mayor come to accept that whatever the law or political elites might say, busting is both necessary and popular.)
Meanwhile, it’s fucking Ghostbusters.
Consultants without their own offices sometimes use this teahouse to meet with clients, I remember in one week I once overheard sessions on the following:
- Preparing to apply to college
- Dealing with jealousy in polyamorous relationships
- Planning a woodcrafts-themed wedding
- Aligning your chakras to unlock career potential
- Setting up a mung bean breakfast bar business for the vegan paleo diet market
I’m back and there’s a pair of maybe 36 year old women at the next table and they’re telling stories about their mommyblogging - like, not sharing tales about their kids, sharing tales about sharing tales about their kids - and one of them is going off about how their son would always be crying at 4am and how that confirmed her in a long-ago argument that that was the true witching hour and she’s proud that he’s inherited her sensitivity to spirits.
Should probably read a book, but now I’ve got enough caffeine in me I’ve lost the necessary calm to merely recieve and appreciate one thing for long enough and I’ll just write essays. Maybe I’ll get to work on polishing off all the half-finished ones I have open as untitled documents on TextEdit so I can finally quit the program to update my OS.
it comes from a lot of sources, honestly? i know for me a lot of it comes from just being basically told, time and time again, a combination of 1. everyone’s opinion is valid and we need to listen to it/debate it earnestly and hear “all sides” and 2. conflict is inherently bad, so some sort of compromise or middle point is obviously the right place to be
which is bullshit of course, but that shit gets wired into your brain pretty hard over the years from media, education, and many other sources besides
acculturation to democratic mythology in which people are the source of legitimacy and equal in this capacity, duh
By 9 November, with workers swarming into the streets of Berlin, the Kaiser abdicated: only the declaration of a republic, with a Labour government and the promised “socialisation of industry”, prevented outright Soviet-style revolution.
These incredible events do not fit easily into the narrative the mass media has been feeding us about the 1914-18 war. We’ve had TV presenters telling us most soldiers “actually enjoyed the war”; we’ve had the former education secretary declaring Britain’s most famous anti-war play – Oh What A Lovely War – to be full of left-wing myths.
But the termination of war by working-class action fits uneasily at a deeper level: for most of history the existence of a workforce with its own consciousness and organisations is an afterthought, or an anomaly. I’ve tried this quiz question again and again on highly-educated people and, even once they know the answer, there are looks of “does not compute”.
Sorry everybody’s dead! I guess it’s because I’m more “Ravenclaw” than “Gryffindor.”

New York’s Pneumatic Tube Mail Network
The pneumatic tube mail was a postal system operating in New York City from 1897 to 1953 using pneumatic tubes. Following the creation of the first pneumatic mail system in Philadelphia in 1893, New York City’s system was begun, initially only between the old General Post Office on Park Row and the Produce Exchange on Bowling Green, a distance of 3,750 feet. Eventually the network stretched up both sides of Manhattan Island all the way to Manhattanvilleon the West side and “Triborough” in East Harlem, forming a loop running a few feet below street level. Travel time from the General Post Office to Harlem was 20 minutes. A crosstown line connected the two parallel lines between the new General Post office on the West Side and Grand Central Terminal on the east, and took four minutes for mail to traverse. Utilizing the Brooklyn Bridge a spur line also ran from Church Street in lower Manhattan to the general post office in Brooklyn (now Cadman Plaza) taking four minutes. Operators of the system were referred to as “Rocketeers”. Wikipedia
4 kids just got on this bus with 7 skateboards between them, some carried and some strapped on. Asked who the other 3 were for, one said some were hard wheels for speed[y travel] [and others soft for performance].
I’m glad I asked.
Oh, I just got sports. It’s iterated enough that you can be a performance (“athletics”) OR a meta (“coaching”) fan OR OR graduate from one to another with age
