Riding around some more. The weather’s nice, warm and humid enough to give the air some mass, it feels like Florida. I was coming back up from down by USC along Westlake. Along one block near MacArthur Park were at least 40 latino teenagers hanging out against a few walls and stoops. Every last attractive girl had a baby with her, that was kinda funny.
Then I got up to the intersection with 7th and there was a big mural of a latina making out with a soldier in desert camo, and I was like “well, this is like two thirds of the way to making some kind of point right here”.
whatcha’ got cookin’
how bout having intercourse
with me?
(P.S. the secret to making any pre-1965 song not goofy as fuck is to take the subtext as “and we’re having sex”. Because it probably is!)
DNA & Breeze - High In The Sun (Justin Time remix)
Triple J - Eternity
Triple J was a project of producers Justin Time and Jimmy J, and vocalist Jenka. It has no relation to the Australian youth radio network, which is the only reason I can imagine that Aussie bands are following me.
I found my first white hair. It’s… in my moustache? That’s actually weird and I plucked it cause it threw stuff off.
My grandmother’s hair turned white starting at the age of 18. I had hoped for that. I dyed my hair black once and it settled in a faded silver that was actually quite complimentary. My father’s side goes grey. I feared my mother’s side went bald based on her father. But there was also her mother, dead before I was born, and her brothers are an even split.
I am wondering if the Dream Center, this local fortress of Christian mercy, shut down for Easter. Or alternately bussed a bunch of people in for a meal or something. Because in the course of walking like 12 blocks round trip today I ran into like 5 scruffy people having incoherent conversations (with themselves a/o me), and none of them regulars. One young dude standing in the bushes by Taco Bell/KFC asked me for a light and when I said sorry I didn’t have one he said that’s okay because of that sport where you have to make polynesian grass skirts.
Vinylgroover - Time After Time
Remember what I said about Vinylgroover’s cash-in knockoff covers? This is probably the best out of all of them. If he were around today, I’m sure he’d be remaking Lady Gaga songs at 180 bpm. Which, now that I think of it, would be awesome.
Interactive - Forever Young
(“Interactive - Forever Young”. See what I’m saying about happycore being distilled ‘90s?)
Blossom - Just A Dream (John Robinson remix)
So the other night I got drunk and at the Gold Room jukebox put on You Belong With Me (which consistently gets one of the best cross-demographic responses I’ve seen), and so I came home and I was like OK I’m willing to give Taylor Swift a shot. So I got on iTunes and bought the Fearless album.
As it turns out, eh. I don’t like the rest of the album as much as the big hit single! Funny that.
But only just today when I was looking through my iTunes I realized I actually bought (for only $11!) the deluxe version of the album, which came with extras. Multimedia extras! So apparently I bought like a gigabyte and a half of Taylor Swift that night, and this is just kind of ridiculous.
So not only do I now own a copy of YBWM, and the YBWM music video, and the 20 minute YBWM music video behind the scenes, but I get the same trifecta for Love Story and White Horse. I now own a collection of press clips and voiced-over establishing shots from her first show of the tour! I now own a minute-and-a-half long T-Pain and Taylor Swift rap video parody written for the CMT awards. (What’s it like? It is a T-Pain and Taylor Swift rap video parody written for the CMT awards is what it’s like.)
But who knows when that will happen and it is this:
In _A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court_, what is up with Twain’s obsession with the disposession of the heirs of medieval suicides? He just keeps coming back to the injustice of this in a way that has nothing at all to do with the plot, and I can’t help but think he was expecting his audience to make some connection that I’m not.
