Although barely out of adolescence…[Shelley] was, in 1813, an ardent radical and anti-monarchist. Physically, he was rather odd, tall and slim to the point of limpness, with a high-pitched effete voice; but what he lacked in physical bulk he more than made up for in charismatic intensity. Among the earliest witnesses to this intensity were his school fellows at Eton, where he was sent by his landowning father when he was twelve. Initially he was bullied for his refusal to ‘fag’ for older boys, but the bullies soon discovered that in spite of his feeble frame, Shelley was not a boy to succumb quietly to taunts. On the contrary, he could be terrifying when roused, and was quite capable of reciprocal acts of violence. He stabbed one tormentor’s hand with a fork, and others remembered him as an almost unearthly creature, with flashing eyes, wild hair, and deathly white cheeks.

Could someone please explain what “to fag” means in this context?

(via talkinggorillabutler)

The student bodies of British boarding schools had internal hierarchies - think of Prefects and the Head Boy/Girl in Harry Potter - and part of this involved upperclassmen taking personal charge of younger students as servants/mentees. This would include the younger boys performing petty chores for the older, one of the more common of which was gathering and carrying bundles of firewood - that is to say, faggots - from whence the name, fagging, with the younger boys as fags.

“Ha ha a more innocent time” except no, this is where the slang for men who have sex with men comes from, it was common knowledge that the older boys  would often use their faggot boys for sex or abuse them for sport, sexually or otherwise.

The conditioning process of character-building institutions often begins with a period of abuse, to shatter an acolyte’s existing personality and render them pliable in preparation for the construction of a new one - consider the way that military training begins at boot camp with drill instructors insulting recruits and assigning them impossible tasks so they can be punished for failing.

With male elites this hazing process has often included a catamite dynamic - consider also the citizens of ancient Greece or Rome, cabin boys in the Royal Navy, more recently the Catholic priesthood, Hollywood, and the BBC.

Honestly can’t wait for the 50 shades movie to normalize the manipulation of lower-level female employees. Can’t wait for the new wave of “consent is sexy” banners on the cover of cosmo. Can’t wait for teen girls to think that a controlling relationship is romantic. Can’t wait for sexualized violence to become increasingly mainstream. And most of all, I can’t wait for BDSM to be labeled a feminist revolution.

Well if it’s any compensation, imagine how irritated the longtime lifestylers and avant-garde types will be, suddenly their munches are full of sorority girls with, like, Hot Topic collars and furry handcuffs. I mean, fucking casuals.

Oh who am I kidding, the doms would love it. Fucking casuals, I mean.

My blog now has Google ads!

The supposedly targeted ad is for Caesar’s Palace.

None of my recent blog posts have mentioned Caesar, palaces, Rome, Las Vegas, or gambling.

But the blog post I was working on earlier today, which has not yet been posted and is still on my computer and which no one except me has seen, mentions Caesar’s Palace by name in the context of a long discussion of something that happened to me in Las Vegas.

Google is getting way too good at what they do.

Eesh.

I’ve suddenly gotten ads for Prilosec the day after I put Pepcid down for “current medications” on the browser-based new patient form in my optometrist’s office, yesterday I got an ad I’m pretty sure was based on something I bought with a credit card in a meatspace store an hour earlier, at least I can visualize the mechanism for those.

Did you maybe copy the Caesar’s Palace text to clipboard while you had a browser open? That’s the only thing I can think of.

Because for the small workplaces that represent most of the American employment experience, for the employment experience that represents most of the typical American life, this would unduly optimize for the question of “what will this person contribute to our profit-oriented commercial enterprise” over the more important question “what will this person contribute to our lived social experience as a potential friend/lover/breeding partner, connection to external social networks, and figure we have to deal with or at least coexist near for most of most days”, dipshit.

“wishing upon a star” is perfectly true and scientifically valid, except that wishes are limited by the speed of light like everything else, so picking any random star will see you long since dead by the time the wish makes it back to you. that being said if you have a star chart and dont mind waiting 8-10 years you should go hog wild

whats the rule for planets. can i wish upon a mars

t-d-x:

this is the astronomical explanation for that song that goes “can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars, i could really use a wish right now”

the narrator needs a wish to come true right now, and wants a wish target that would make the light-speed turn-around time as quick as possible

any object can be “wished upon” but high-energy sources like stars are generally your best bet to get a wish to stick. wish success also scales depending on the size and output of a given star; i.e. a quasar vs. a gas giant or rocky planet.

wishes aimed at solid surfaces display reflective properties in much the same way as other frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum, which can be taken advantage of (“bouncing” a wish off the moon toward a closer, more powerful star below the earth’s horizon, etc)

wishing on the sun is possible but not recommended in accordance with the “genie’s gambit” law of reciprocal irony

A telling thing about Portland is how the street renamed MLK Boulevard, & the one Rosa Parks Way, were in places where they made sense and for maybe another decade still will, but all the streets that made sense for Caesar Chavez Boulevard were passed over in favor of one that the downtown/inner SE white lifestylers might ever use.

So I’ve had people ask what’s up with me and Taylor Swift and the answer is that she’s the only active American writer I consider my unambiguous superior.

(And she is a writer first and foremost, only incidentally a performer. Even then primarily as an author of experiences, she’s not actually a particularly good singer or instrumentalist.)
