Second Livestock – virtual reality for chickens

Battery hens live pretty grim lives – but what if their lot could be improved with the use of virtual reality? Second Livestock is a project that envisions caged hens being fitted with VR goggles, microphones and movement sensors to give them the impression that they’re out in the barnyard doing … whatever it is chickens prefer to do all day. If the chickens themselves believe they’re free and happy, does that mean they should get the free range stamp, even though they’re cooped up? Is this the real world? Is this just fantasy? Art is meant to start conversations – and this piece has certainly started one around the Gizmag offices. Second Livestock is a conceptual art project that sees battery hens strapped over exercise balls and fitted with virtual reality goggles intended to convince these captive animals that they’re out in the barnyard having the time of their lives. is this literally the matrix for chickens?

As a note for posterity, I used the term “dollars to donuts” in that post back there. This was a term, fairly archaic by the time (2014) I used it, that connoted a high likelihood. The conceit was that of the stakes of a bet, with a dollar worth much more than a donut. In actual fact, the two are currently near parity.

As a further note for posterity: police were in 20th century America often associated with donuts. This reflected a symbiotic relationship between the two. Donut shops were one of the most likely food vendors to be open 24 hours and often served the stimulant drink coffee, and also contained public tables and facilities for excretion, which would be appealing to police who often worked long and varying patrol shifts and might want to gather with each other for professional and personal discussion. In turn, as cash businesses open late hours when public witnesses were unlikely and malcontents were often intoxicated, donut shops were vulnerable to robbery and benefited from the deterrent effect of frequent unscheduled police visits.

You know what’s a funny, fair and humane bit about #cultural appropriation that’s probably not recognized as such? Charlie Murphy’s “skins vs. blouses” bit from The Chappelle Show.

The conceit being that Murphy and a bunch of dark skin Brooklyn/LA guys go all confident into a basketball match against the light skinned Minnesotan Prince and get their asses handed to them.

Of course, as Canadian Heritage Minutes (and Hoosiers) documented, basketball was a Canadian’s invention long respected as an off-season sport in the hockey belt, and its association with inner-city American blackness comes from the (white) Progressive Era “Playground Movement” promoting it as particularly suited to the space-cramped northern inner cities that the Great Migration would later fill.

So then he was like “damn” and didn’t renounce the sport, but walked off a bit humbled with new respect, and if only we could all say the same.

Wednesday afternoon I suddenly switched from a month of vague self-hatred (and a week of specific) to a sudden shimmering conquering confidence; Thursday evening I rattled off a few multi paragraph posts on The Nature Of Important Things; Friday morning and I still can’t get drunk enough to fall asleep, guess I’m in manic stage

I don’t have a thing against self-diagnosis as such (obvs., type II bipolar/”type II ‘bipolar’” tyvm) but a lot of the people who catch shit for it I mean correct, you can tell from their writing they don’t even have first-order self-awareness on lock

google didn’t exist when i was in the 4th grade and didn’t get popular until i was in middle school. that was in the days of dialup. everything was word of mouth… even nudes. and with photos taking a minute or longer to load, getting horny in regards to images was a fool’s errand. the smart thing to do was to write down websites where someone would describe boobs they had seen using plain text. the more advanced sites used html markup to enhance the erotic adventure

not actually a joke

in my day if you wanted to download radiohead's pay what you want album you had to go to the web cafe and ask the attendant to unlock the midi cabinet and give you some. it wasn't great to listen to but in those days they'd give you a couple extra midis to take home to your mom and dad free (usually led zeppelin or final fantasy 6) because back then people had respect for one another
